Al Barnett has
sent in his third report: We are leaving this weekend for France
to spend Easter in, hopefully, warmer weather. So it will be a little
more difficult to keep in touch with progress on the RV8 purchase.
The car is now paid for and the Bank in Dorking now knows how to
transfer Yen to Tokyo. They were very helpful but any idea that
they would show me what to do was dashed by the "I have never
done one of these before" statement. Anyway it all worked and
in 3 days the money had arrived in Japan. The rate of exchange was
very fair but the charges were around £40 (GBP40).
The car has now been collected on a low loader by the Japanese agent
and taken away - I know not where but hope to hear in the next week
or so. I am now waiting to hear when we will get a place on a ship
and a rough arrival time in UK.
After hearing depressing tales of theft of tools, CD players etc
from cars in transit I was very pleased to find that David Bonniface,
the vendor, is coming to UK from Japan in a couple of weeks time
and will bring most of the valuable and removable items with

him. I think he would baulk at bringing the spare wheel as hand baggage
but in extremis I do have a couple of spares. The whole transaction
with David has been very civilised, even to the extent of emailing
me to say he had forgotten that the telescopic boot stays were a bit
weak but he would order two new ones from Clive Wheatley and have
them sent on to me.
My own RV8 is now for sale with Clive Wheatley so anyone looking for
a well cared for car at a good price should contact him. I have also
had an email from Fred Jenns of Classic and Sportscar Consultants
with an offer to help with shipping, but things were already well
underway so I had to decline. As far as I can see the budget won't
bring my new RV8 into the top tax rates as it has already been registered
in 95 and therefore does not fall in to the post 2001 emissions regime.
The next milestone should be the shipping date.

Diary
of reimporting Oxford Blue 1589
We felt many members would be interested in a series of running reports
on Al Barnett's experiences with reimporting this RV8. So Al will
be sending a series of reports of how he has organised the export
arrangements, freight and insurances, reimport procedures, collection
from the UK docks and preparation for UK roads. The full set of reports
is available using the links below.
