Small bottle of single malt to the first person who can identify
the ridge in this photo. (9.4.07) |

The
photo was taken by Victor Smith in May 2006 from Carn Mor Dearg
(1,220m) on an exceptionally fine day. The long ridge ahead is the
CMD Arête which leads, just by the snow on the right of the
photo, up a steep section on snow to the domed top of Ben Nevis
(1,344m). The Ben Nevis plateau is usually covered in deep snow
and for 150 to 250m back west off the top towards the popular route
down. Beyond are the mountains of the Mamores the other side of
Glen Nevis. In the bottom right hand corner is the corrie below
the North Face of the Ben which is just out of the picture on the
right. Even in June, July or August conditions for this route can
be very difficult, often in cloud with wind and rain or even snow,
so this photo records an exceptional day. Sadly no member was able
to identify the ridge. (17.6.07)
Conditions on a day in late April 2007 were very similar and provided
an opportunity to guide a friend up the CMD Arête route. A
set of photos in PDF format show the route in more detail. The file
size is 1.5MB. More
