George
Wilder reports that some RV8 production archive
material passed to the Club for its archives refers
to concerns with the RV8 Front Suspension Beam and
the steering rack mounts. It appears that as a consequence
changes were made to the front suspension beams
on the RV8 press cars and on the early production
cars up to VIN 0293. Subsequent vehicles had the
modified beam fitted. It seems the original beams
had steering rack mounts made of an incorrect gauge
of metal.
Fortunately the reports of cracked mounts on RV8s
have been very, very few, but cracks were found
on a later RV8, Woodcote Green 1664, in March 2006

see RV8NOTE243.
So a regular thorough inspection of the steering
rack mounts by an experienced RV8 specialist is
strongly recommended.
On the same point, George
feels it is also worth repeating again that as the
front crossmember assemblies on MGBGTV8s are now
well over 35 years old - over 3 times their design
life - any component such as this should have an
annual inspection, as indeed should all safety critical
items. We know that experienced RV8 and MGBV8 specialists
are now including a thorough inspection of the mounts
as a part of most service work they carry out on
these cars to make sure any early signs of cracks
in the mounts are spotted at an early stage. Brown
& Gammons first highlighted the problem which
was promptly written up in both the RV8 and V8 Workshop
Notes series (see links alongside) together with
their gusset strengthening measure. |
