Scrappage scheme in the UK under consideration?
A report in the Times on 12th March 2009 indicates there is a growing frustration among industry chiefs and unions over what they see as the lack of urgency by the Government in tackling the problems of the UK car industry, which has suffered the loss of thousands of jobs and is enforcing widespread shutdowns to reduce output as sales plunge. Industry figures had hoped to hear news of other initiatives, such as access to consumer credit, which they view as vital.

They also want a scrappage incentive, which would allow drivers with old cars to scrap them and receive a cash bonus to spend on a new car. This measure has boosted demand in Germany significantly. Lord Mandelson said that while the Government was "looking at" the possibilities of a car-scrapping scheme, no decision had been made yet.

In a television interview the previous evening, a trade minister responded to a query whether a scrappage scheme would be introduced in the UK with typical clarity of a politician - we "haven't ruled it in, we haven't ruled it out". (12.3.09)
