Replacing the tachometer bulb on an MGBGTV8
Tony Head
posted a query on the V8BB seeking help in how to replace the bulb. He felt it was hardly a very technical query but his speedo illumination bulb had blown and needed replacing. He asked "has anyone found a way of reaching it please? I've tried all sorts of contortions in the driver's footwell and behind the facia but I simply can't get my fingers anywhere near the offending bulb. Meanwhile I'm looking for some form of very long nosed pliers or remote gripping gadget to reach the bulb. Any suggestions please?"

Tony Head
then reported a few days later he had solved the problem of replacing instrument bulbs. He had ordered a pair of extra-long nose pliers from a supplier on eBay and although he felt they were not very high quality they enabled him to reach the bulb holder at the back of the speedometer quite easily from the footwell and then grip the rim of the bulb holder to withdraw it. Feeding the holder with the new bulb into the back of the gauges is slightly more tricky but easy enough with a steady hand and good lighting in the footwell. It took 3 minutes to change the

speedometer bulb and a further 3 minutes to change the oil pressure/temperature gauge bulb. He used LED bulbs and the result is a considerable improvement in the illumination of the dashboard dials.

The pliers Tony used were the "11 inch Extra Long Nose Pliers Straight 25 & 45 Degrees Bent Tip Hand Tool Set" he obtained from a trader advertising on eBay for the princely sum of £13 including postage. See the link below, although offers like this are likely to be often removed or replaced, but a key word search on the internet will find current offers. Link

Tony Head also added that "disconnecting or isolating the batteries is advisable of course when doing the job as
there is risk of the pliers shorting out various connections in the vicinity behind the dashboard. Also it is important to grip the metal bulb holder (by the rim) when pulling out the bulb; attempting to pull on the connecting wire risks the electrical connection inside the bulb holder being broken". Wearing a pair of protective goggles is also wise in case any material is dislodged and falls onto your face when you are in an upended position in the leg well!

Good to see a clear and practical way of dealing with a task many MGV8 enthusiasts may want to do if a bulb fails or as a worthwhile LED replacement as an upgrade.
