Refurbishing a set of Dunlop composite wheels

With MWS ceasing to offer a full restoration service for Dunlop composite wheels a few years ago many MGBGTV8 enthusiasts are having to think through their options if their wheels are showing signs of corrosion or worse. Here Mike Breedon describes his experience with a set of wheels for one of his MGBGTV8s.

An original set of Dunlop wheels were in an appalling state, even to the extent Mike Breedon never thought they would be used again without a full refurbishment through dismantling each wheel - but as others have found that option is no longer available. "Recently I even thought I might as well get them powder coated but, that was not possible locally for various process reasons. In shear desperation I decided to get out the electric drill, a big supply of heavy duty Scotchbright type Flap wheels and just have a go to see what was under all the paint, dirt, dust and whatever else was on each wheel. I was amazed to find they were just about useable underneath it all and so made progress to clean up all five wheels in my garage. They are showing signs of rust in the chrome but much to my surprise, not too bad, with all the areas of corrosion and paint off the alloy centres, they are now ready for painting. They are just about recoverable for a run-about MGBGTV8 but definitely not for any concours car".
