David
Stonehouse says "I read with some degree of interest
the feature article in the December 2019 issue of Safety Fast!
about V8 alternators and just thought it maybe useful to share
my experience. When I bought my V8 in 1989 it had an AC Delco
alternator fitted which I had rebuilt at least six times during
the first 12 years of my ownership of the V8. I then purchased
what I thought was a Bosch alternator from Sovereign Motors
in Romford, Essex. I remember having to take it apart to move
it one quadrant round to ensure that it fitted. I have been
using this alternator now for 18 years on the car without problems.
In 2018, I was advised by my local garage that they thought
the alternator may need new bearings as it was making a noise.
So I took it to a local chap, John Scuse of Partney Mill in
Lincolnshire. He told me that he can repair any make of alternator,
dynamo or starter motor and has been in business for over 50
years). He repaired the alternator and told me that it was a
Mitsubushi model which was very popular on Ford rally cars in
the 1970s and 1980s because it was dual outlet and rated 50
amps.
As you can see from the photographs it fits every so neatly
in the engine bay. The only thing is that the plug on the rear
is masked by the rocker box cover but that is not really a problem
as it is seldom needs any attention. Whilst the purists might
not welcome Japanese parts on their MG it has been absolutely
reliable, looks the part and there are few who would not know
it was not an original part. I
know recommendations can be fraught but I highly recommend John
Scuse. He is an old fashioned engineer who knows his stuff,
has been repairing electrical items for many years and it both
very reasonable and good". |
