403 What
does an ignition amplifier do and what is the benefit of having one? This
question was raised on a V8BB thread on rechipping an RV8. Alan Rennie responded.
(Feb 15)
Alan Rennie noted the amplifier
increases the spark output delivered to the spark plugs. Members who have had
an upgrade package comprising an Optimax ECU chip with a new ignition amplifier,
new plugs and new Magnecor leads mention they feel the outcome is worth it - smoother
engine, far more responsive through the gears and better fuel economy. Which part
of that upgrade package leads to the improvements is not so clear, the Magnecor
leads for example can make a useful contribution to smoother running. The amplifier
module is located at the bottom of the distributor (see 4 alongside).
Mike
Howlett feels Chris Ho asks a perfectly reasonable question about the ignition
amplifier. This doesn't apply to factory GTV8 cars, but to RV8s and Rover V8 engines
with electronic distributors. The Lucas distributor used in these engines has
no contact breaker points, but uses an electronic sensor instead. The signal from
this sensor needs to be amplified to be able to trigger the coil low tension.
On the original distributor,
Lucas fitted a small flat amplifier on the side of the distributor body (see 4
above). This worked alright, but wasn't very powerful, and was prone to failure
due to getting too hot. The A&R amplifier that RPi sell can be fitted remotely
away from the worst of the heat and produces a bigger output than the original.

on his MGBGTV8 conversion worked well for over 20,000 miles, the only drawback
being the adhesive mounting which isn't up to the job!
Simon Austin
added a note on the V8BB thread that he had installed the remote amplifier on
his RV8 some time ago (see the third link below) and feels the location of the
amplifier away from engine heat is helpful. His amplifier came mounted to an aluminum
bracket, not adhesive, which he feels would take a | . major
accident to dislodge.
