Windstop bracket
Last year I bought a windstop from MGOC, but found the brackets
fouled the hood frame. Newtons kindly replaced them with a new
design which fitted under the frame, leaving it free to rise
or lower. However it is very difficult to unzip the rear window
withthe screen in place. I have seen brackets which fit into
the tonneau support slots, making removal of the whole windstop
quite simple. Neither B&G nor MGOC can source these. Any
suggestions?

Windtop bracket
A modified bracket is described by Paul Wilson (Woodcote Green
0929) from Yorkshire in RV8NOTE228. He purchased a windstop
for his RV8 but found he could not raise the hood with the windstop
brackets in place, so he set about modifying them to overcome
the problem. See also RV8NOTE224, RV8NOTE205 and RV8NOTE127.

Hugh Boddington
has some experience of fitting a Newton windstop to his RV8 so he
provides some useful tips and photos too. Hugh says "I purchased
a Newton Windstop and had the same problem of not being able to fold
it forward to access the rear screen zip, and also I was unable to
fit the full length tonneau without removing the fixing bolts.
To overcome the problem, I removed the restraining struts from the
brackets and now rely on the back of the seats/headrests to prevent
it falling forward whilst driving. I also removed the mesh screen,
and replaced it with clear plastic, giving far better rear view and
especially at 45°.
Further
I was able to thread the seat belt through it in a straight line,
rather than underneath which I feared would eventually wear the webbing."
What kit do you need?
Hugh says "Newton Commercial's part number for the kit I used
is VT8017A MG - MGB Windstop kit in black at £145.44
and you also need an MGB - RV8 bracket (part number ZP34) at
£50.00 for the pair. Carriage was £12.00 and there was
VAT too. The kit, I think, included the brackets for the MGB and the
expensive RV8 brackets were an extra so that I can use the windstop
on either the MGB or RV8.
I fitted the kit myself and had several conversations with John White
at Newton Commercial and suggested he should modify the bracket as
it did not allow the screen to fold forward, and further I had to
grind the thickness down considerably, as it was spraining the hood
stays - see the copy of the instructions from Newton Commercial. The
bracket for the B is fitted between the hood frame and the body work
so the problem did not arise - a much better fitting. I attach the
fitting
instructions for the MGB. |
