A
series of V8 servo failures have been reported
Fortunately brake failures from servo problems are rare but,
unlike difficulties with slave cylinders where early warning
signs can usually be detected, early warning signs of potential
servo failure are few. The key feature of a series of alarming
servo failures reported by members with Factory MGBGTV8s is
the loss of braking is very rapid indeed as the servo swallows
the brake fluid! Fortunately they have been at low speeds and
without damage to the car or personal injury.

does a V8 brake servo work?
A natural tendency
is to think it can never happen to you - your brakes are operating
well, without the slightest hint of any servo problems. But
those who have had that spine chilling experience would urge
you to have a 35 year old servo examined off the car and where
necessary professionally refurbished. An alternative is to invest
in a brand new servo because the reliability of your V8 brakes
is not something to scrimp on – that cost is modest in
terms of your peace of mind and personal safety!

So to encourage

checked, we are running a V8 Servo Check scheme jointly with
five leading V8 specialists - Beech Hill Garage, Brown &
Gammons, Clive Wheatley mgv8parts, Hall's Garage and the Tamar
Valley Motoring Centre. Other V8 specialists who are members
of the V8LIFELINE are very welcome
to participate in this scheme.

During March,
April and May 2009 our five V8 specialists have agreed to remove
your servo and then either have it reconditioned by a servo
specialist and refitted or have it replaced with a new servo.
There will be standard charges for the work which will include
a safety inspection of the master and slave cylinders, examining
the front rubber flexibles and brake lines, recharging the system
with brake fluid, bleeding and testing. Any additional work
from the safety check will of course be a separate charge.
