Take care to ensure you have the correct style of registration plate on a classic car in the UK

Concern over incorrect number plates on classic cars
George Wilder follows the regulations that apply to classic cars and has seen a gradual increase in the number of MGBs, MGBGTV8s and indeed a few RV8s with incorrect registration plates. Some enthusiasts are replacing the original reflective plates with the older style of registration plate with metal letters and numbers on a black background. He is concerned that continued abuse of the rules will eventually lead, he feels sure, to the DVLA imposing reflective plates for all classic cars thereby destroying the character of the older vehicles which can have them at present. He adds, registration plates are now an MOT inspection item and if an eagle-eyed tester spots the plates are incorrect could lead to a test failure.

DVLA document V796 (available online) gives full details of the requirements for displaying the registration marks on vehicles registered in the UK saying vehicles constructed before 1st January 1973 may display traditional style “black and white” plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate.
