For
too long there's been a common misconception that
insurance fraud is somehow a 'victimless crime'
- that fraudulent claims just dent the pockets of
so-called 'fat cat' corporates. In a recent report,
David Neave (Chairman of the Insurance Fraud Bureau
or IFB) says "let me dispel that myth - insurance
fraud costs us all. As honest policyholders we pick
up a collective bill for fraud through increased
premiums. Are you happy giving fraudsters £50
of your money each and every year when you renew
your motor |
insurance
cover? But in 'Crash for Cash', insurance fraud
poses even starker risks to society. Innocent motorists
are being targeted on roads by fraudsters motivated
by greed. By deliberately causing accidents, fraudsters
are gambling with the lives of innocent people."
Criminal gangs organising multi-million pound 'Crash
for Cash' scams are using the profits of their fraud
to fund other crimes plaguing our society - illegal
firearms, drug dealing and people trafficking, to
name just a few examples. Far from being a victimless
crime, insurance fraud is something we all need
to be wary of.
