A report on a comparative test with various penetrating oils published a few years ago in Machinist’s Workshop Mag™ was spotted by a former engine development engineer friend of Nic Houslip. He felt fellow V8 members might find it interesting and maybe it might someone to free a nut or bolt safely on one of our aging V8s. The magazine reported they tested various
penetrating oils for break out torque on rusted nuts. The tests were carried out on the popular penetrating oils with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” environment.

The ATF-Acetone mix was a “home brew” mix of 50-50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the “home brew” was better than any commercial product in this test. Nic Houslip adds a footnote with the usual disclaimer that acetone is highly flammable
