Concern
over non-standard RV8 wheels meeting TÜV requirements
in Germany
What are
TÜVs?
TÜVs; short for Technischer Überwachungs-Verein (Technical
Inspection Association), are German organizations that work
to validate the safety of products of all kinds to protect people
and the environment against hazards. As independent consultants,
they examine all types of equipment including motor vehicles.
No German-registered road vehicle may be used on public roads
without a certificate from a TÜV.

Peter
Garton, a regular contributor on RV8 matters from
Germany, was contacted by a fellow RV8 owner in
Köln who has moved from the UK to Germany with
his RV8 which is fitted with 17" wheels from
Clive Wheatley mgv8parts. Not unexpectedly he's
now got a TÜV problem because they won't pass
the car with non-standard wheels. Peter says "I've
tried to help via a TÜV contact in Essen but
he wants to know if there is anyone in Germany with
17" wheels. Clive submitted a certificate which
I don't think will be sufficient since there is
no official approval on it for the 17" wheels
fitted to the RV8."
Left top: 17inch wheel and Right lower:
standard wheel.
Peter feels fellow RV8 enthusiasts thinking of registering
a car in Germany need to be aware of this potential
TÜV "danger".
We will follow this case as it will provide a useful
guide for other RV8 enthusiasts in Germany.
