Insurance for an RV8, is age a problem?

Peter Best spotted the V8 Bulletin Board thread launched by Robert Kerr seeking help from fellow members with their experience with insuring an RV8 in the UK, particularly when you are an older driver, and he contacted the V8 Webmaster with his helpful advice.

Robert Kerr posted a note on the V8 Bulletin Board on Friday 9th July saying "I am seriously thinking of jacking it in from Kuwait next year when I shall be 66. My MGBV8 is back to being a project in the UK (re-shelling now) although still insured with Lancaster. I intend to purchase an MG RV8 to use at least until the B is back on the road or longer. Has anyone good experiences insuring these cars when over 65 or 70 even? I shall need an 'agreed value' and European cover. In the case of a total loss I would like to retain the bits for salvage. Then again any really bad experiences?

Both Mike Taylor and Hugh Boddington responded recommending Peter Best Insurance Services with Hugh saying "I have been with them ten years insuring my two MGs and a modern car. I am 76 and age does not appear a problem to them." Ian Quarrington added "PBIS insure all our cars all with agreed value and all with a very good and proper comprehensive policy. Very good service and highly competitive and I am just 50!"

Victor Smith noted a report was published on the V8 Website in December 2008 based on an exercise where a couple of members obtained comparative quotes from the leading insurance brokers offering cover for MGBGTV8s and RV8s. The report also covered the claims experience from the relatively few members who have needed to make a claim as a consequence of an accident or other insurable event.
The detailed reports of the comparative quotes set out clearly the scope of cover obtained from each of the brokers. Victor recommended "calling three brokers and discuss the questions you have raised - you will find limited mileage -agreed value cover is available at competitive prices and, as Hugh Boddington mentions, age is not a barrier. The insurers have recognised that owners of classic cars like MGV8s look after their cars, cover modest annual mileages and have a good claims record as a group.

Nigel Ricardo added "I am not quite as old as you, but when we moved back from France in January I found Adrian Flux to be the most competitive. They covered my BMW 1 Series M Sport(LHD) and RV8 at the best quote I could find."

Peter Best spotted the V8 Bulletin Board thread launched by Robert Kerr seeking help from fellow members with their experience with insuring an RV8 in the UK, particularly when you are an older driver, and he contacted the V8 Webmaster with his helpful advice saying "PBIS will be delighted to help Robert on his return to UK. We insure a goodly percentage of RV8s and am pleased that we have high retention figures. As you know we have European cover, Euro Roadside Assistance and Recovery, agreed value, a nil glass excess etc and our insurers Ecclesiastical have an excellent claims reputation. Officially we go to age 79 these days but depending on circumstances we will go higher!"

So we have encouraged Robert to give Matthew Best a call on Monday morning on 01621 840400.
