Roy
McCarthy, the well known MG motor racing competitor,
passed away on 7th October after a twelve year battle
with cancer. Roy began competing in an MGA in 1970
with fellow competitors like Vic Ellis and Rob Innes-Ker,
then ran a Big Healey followed by an MGB Roadster
and a standard MGBGTV8, but competed in a fully
modified BCV8 Class D MGBGTV8 for many years. In
that |
time
he won the Club's MGA and BCV8 Championships and
the Thoroughbred Sportscar Championship. The sight
of his bright yellow MGBGTV8 being driven with blistering
speed and skill at Club race meetings was a delight
for both spectators and fellow competitors.
Roy
went to the Masters event at Donington in early
September 2010 as an invited driver who had competed
there in 1977 when the circuit first reopened and
was looking forward to competing at the Club's two
day end of season race meeting at Snetterton at
the beginning of October as that was to have marked
the end of his 40th season of continuous racing
with MG Car Club. After the great news in early
September that Roy had again beaten off the disease
he went for his scan at the Royal Marsden on the
11th September to get him ready for the stem cell
treatment only to have the devastating news that
there was nothing more that could be done in the
very short time he had left with us. With failing
strength he sent his son Spencer to that event who
drove the MGBGTV8 to a win in the BCV8 Championship
race and enjoyed watching videos of the racing and
presentation of awards when his sons got home.
Mike
Breedon, a long-standing fellow competitor and current
BCV8 Championship chairman, said "motor racing,
the BCV8 and the MG Car Club will miss his input,
enthusiasm and commitment."
The
funeral is being arranged for Thursday 21st October
2010. For details please contact the V8
Registrar.
