Help for Heroes appeal
A battalion of wives and girlfriends every bit as dedicated as their husbands and boyfriends on the front line in Iraq and Afghanistan has launched a campaign, Help for Heroes. They aim to raise £5m to build a swimming pool and gym complex for wounded heroes at the military rehabilitation centre at Headley Court near Banstead in Surrey. The centre specialises in treating "complex trauma" usually involving head and spinal injuries and in helping those who have lost limbs to walk again.

By Saturday 29th December, Help for Heroes had raised £1.5m and the mail has been pouring in faster than it can be opened by the charity's team of WAGS. The response has been boosted by the support provided by the Sunday Times Christmas appeal and the generosity of readers of that newspaper.

Our forces serving in dangerous conflict zones deserve the best treatment and rehabilitation should they suffer serious injuries. Many of us also feel they need the reassurance those facilities are there. (30.12.07)
