When we have news that beer sales in UK pubs are falling, now is the time to celebrate one of the amusing and memorable aspects of UK beers - the beer mat. Often colourful and increasingly imaginative, they are both a clever marketing device to register the brand with the customer but also perform that essential function of sitting under your glass! The aim of this new series is simply to reflect on some of the beer mats which have interesting subject matter or designs that appeal to a V8 enthusiast. The Speckled Hen series for example featuring old Foxy and his friends or the Deuchars IPA mats celebrating 20 years of the fictional Edinburgh detective in Ian Rankin's gripping novels.
