How to deactivate or disable the RV8 volumetric alarm
Peter Garton explains how this adjustment to the burglar or anti-theft system can be made. (Aug 12)

The volumetric sensor is located underneath the centre arm rest and its function is to provide an antitheft alarm for the interior of the car. The idea is to prevent anyone stealing items from the interior of the car or fumbling with the controls, particularly when the car is parked with the hood down. So once the volumetric sensor is armed, anyone reaching into the interior of the car will then set off the alarm. It is possible, however, to set the alarm on the RV8 without the volumetric sensor being activated or enabled.

To do so one adapts the following procedure:
1
Open the driver's door but make sure the passenger door is locked.
2
Press the car key fob remote to activate the alarm.
3
Lights will start to flash on the dashboard.
4
Close the driver's door and lock it and again the indicator lights will flash and the dash red light will settle down to a steady rhythm. The car alarm is now activated, but the volumetric part is not.
It is possible to "blunt" (reduce the sensitivity) the volumetric sensor activity. In the past, it has happened that the volumetric sensor has set off the alarm when the car has been parked up somewhere in the open by falling leaves, a butterfly or a bird which is embarrassing if one is in a shop somewhere. Eventually the horn will stop blowing,

however. It is possible to desensitize this function but it can only be carried out by a dealer or specialist service provider who still has the necessary MG Rover CD rom for the MG RV8. I had mine done since the alarm went off in the middle of the night in my garage and also twice in parking lots.

Burglar or antitheft alarm on the RV8
The RV8 is fitted with both a perimetric and volumetric alarm system. Both systems work equally well with the hood up or down. The main components of the system are set out on pages 19 and 20 of the MG RV8 Technical Reveal. There you will also find details of arming the system, the rolling code, vehicle immobilisation and the self testing procedure for the alarm system. The RV8 Owner's Handbook covers the anti-theft alarm on pages 9 to 13. The Anti-theft volumetric sensor is covered in the Electrical section, Repairs page 7 of the RV8 Repair Manual.
