RV8
boot lid struts
Peter Wallis from Hampshire posted a note on the V8BB with a
useful, moneysaving tip on sourcing replacement struts at a
competitive price. (Mar 10)
Peter
said "I've recently had to replace my gas boot lid struts
which I obtained directly from Stabilus on 01332 298126 - part
number 2399AS price £12.50 each. "Every little helps!""
Peter
Garton from Germany responded "If one has direct contact
to Stabilus, I was wondering whether they can increase the internal
gas pressure of the struts so that when one opens the boot lid
it opens up without any additional lifting help?" Peter
Wallis replied "I just fitted the two new struts and they
are excellent. I imagine yours like mine were just past there
sell by date as the new set works perfectly."
Lindsay
Caffin added "I had my struts regassed when I arrived home
with my RV8 in Australia from Japan, 18 months ago. I had my
BMW bonnet struts
|
regassed
and they were working well after five years when I sold it.
I would not bother buying new ones." Peter
Wallis replied "Never thought of that one (regassing) Lindsay,
I'll go and rescue the old ones!" Simon Austin in Canada
added "it's ironic this message
should appear as I was suffering from flat struts on my RV8.
I was going to order new ones from the UK but fortunately, there's
a fellow in the Vancouver area who sells strut kits and can
recharge existing struts. I took mine in and a couple of days
later I installed them and with the push of a button, the trunk
lid swings wide open. This is the place that repaired mine."

John
Cumming in Suffolk commented that "I had my RV8 boot struts
re-gassed by SGS Engineering UK Ltd, Coburn Place, Newland Street,
Derby DE1 1JT, 01332 366232, in May 2007 and they are still
working fine. The cost was £12.50 each so £25.00
plus £7.50 carriage and VAT, a total of £38.19.
This now seems expensive against new at £12.50 each. Peter
Wallis noted "Yes new for £12.50 is excellent and
the ball fittings are much better as they are now in chrome." |
