Where can I get a replacement RV8 ignition key?
Mike Giblenn posted a V8BB message asking fellow members where he could get a replacement RV8 key with the pivoting fob? (Feb 09)

With his query, Mike Giblenn said "I do have a second key but it does not bend at 90 degrees so will not fit into the ignition. I have tried all the usual places. Your help would be appreciated." Steve Birmingham responded "I was in the same predicament last year. I posted a query on the V8BB and on other forums, but nobody knew of a definite source. I went down various avenues and ended up at the local MG dealers in Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire and they said, although they had the key cutting equipment, the blanks where no longer available! They directed me to a place in Bradford, and I had a key cut there. It's not an original RV8 key, it's all metal and about 10 mm smaller than the 'pivoting fob', so it does fit. I would still like a spare "bendy key" if I could find one, so if anyone knows of a supplier do let me know.

Stuart Middlemiss then noted "the RV8 ignition and boot locks were made by Neiman, with key blanks currently made by Silca. These are code NE38 (bare metal) and NE38AP, NE38DP and NE38P (each with different shape of plastic key head). The NE38AP looks closest to the length of key shank, and total length, of the original key but I am not sure if any of the blanks have the swivel/pivoted head of the original. North West Keys stock the Silca blanks and also have a cutting service. See link

I haven't bought spares myself, so double check the dimensions etc. If the head of the bare metal version is too large to fit in the constricted space of the RV8, you could cut it to fit perhaps, rounding off the edges. While we're on the subject, the glove box and petrol cap lock and keys were made by Weston Body Hardware (WBH), serial number FT xxx. See www.wbh.co.uk/technical-lock.htm

Rob Collier enquired "has anyone tried Clive Wheatley as I understood he has had some original key blanks in the past?"

Kev Lillywhite noted he had got a spare key cut at the high street chain, Timpsons. They do a key with a cut-
off top that fits quite well and does the job for a spare key."

Then Andi Stelloh from Germany provided a useful source: "I have got original keys with a pivoting fob from my local Land Rover Dealer. The part number is CWE 100860." Stuart Middlemiss added "this part number is listed for the Freelander Series 1 and certainly looks the right type of pivoting head. However, I can only find it on the Continental European parts listings, not in the UK parts. In the event that it is not available from Land Rover parts suppliers in the UK, you might find you are asked the favour of getting a few keys for fellow members and sending them over!"

Dennis Hodge
added "I work in the security industry, and since reading this message have been looking for a supply of suitable blanks. As well as those listed, a JMA blank NE11P is useable However I have stumbled across the following - original Rover hinged blanks can be purchased on eBay. Just put Rover key blanks in the search box." Philip Oldfield added "I purchased keys from Rover Link MG Rover Parts. They have a selection available and I chose a swivel key with the MG motive - an octagan shape in black plastic. It is of better quality than the original and slightly bigger. I received excellent service and they can cut keys by quoting the original key number to them." All keys are listed on their web site www.roverlink.co.uk

Victor Smith noted that "following Rob Collier's comment, I called Clive Wheatley this afternoon and he confirmed he has had a stock of original MG Rover key blanks with the swivel. They are the original Land Rover part and he confirmed the part number given by Andi Stelloh. Clive's price is £7.10 plus VAT. He has a local man who cuts them for £1.50 but needs an original key to cut the new one. It is worth talking with Clive if you have difficulties with parts for an RV8 or MGBV8, rather than seeking solutions which might be a compromise."

Mike Giblenn then completed the thread with "thanks for the info regarding Clive Wheatley. I did put a call into Clive a couple of months ago but was told they could not get the keys. I will give him another call. Thanks to all."
