Another landslide on the Rest and be Thankful Pass in the North West Highlands

This A83 route to Inverary on Loch Fyne through the mountains over the Rest and be Thankful pass goes from Artgartan on the A82, on the side of Loch Lomond (north of Glasgow) to Cairndow on the side of Upper Loch Fyne.

When the pass is closed because of landslips there is a 60 mile detour north via the A82 to Crianlarich and Tyndrum, then west on the A85 to just beyond Dalmally and then south on the A819 to Inverrary.

So any V8 enthusiasts with plans for an Autumn touring holiday in the NW Highlands be aware of this problem if you want to visit Inverary via the Rest and be Thankful route.

Report on the landslide in a newsletter from the West Coast Today

Drivers face a 60-mile detour in Argyll after a series of landslides closed the A83 near the Rest and be Thankful. Bear Scotland said five hours of heavy rain around Butterbridge and Glen Kinglas caused 11 landslides in the early hours of Monday.
The roads maintenance operator said a clean-up operation was ongoing, but further "intense rainfall" was forecast. Traffic Scotland advised that diversions were in place via the A819, A85 and A82. The road is not expected to reopen until Tuesday.
Latest RABT landslide would NOT be prevented by a debris shelter

This week’s closure of the Rest and Be Thankful that forced drivers to take a 60-mile detour would not have been prevented by the Scottish Government’s chosen solution - a debris shelter. A news item from the A
rgyllshire-Advertiser says a "debris shelter selected by the Scottish Government costing £470m as its preferred long-term solution but would not extend as far as Butterbridge where the most significant of the 11 landslides that occurred on Monday 1st September".
