Just two of this month’s fallers were in the sub-£50k category, both MGs - the MG TD and the MG RV8 were partners in decline. The RV8 has slipped 5.2% to give a price staircase of £6k, £9.5k, £13.5k and £17.5k. This Nineties rebirth of the MGB, complete with thumping 4-litre Rover V8 power and all the wood and leather you could wish for offers a sweet spot of classic styling blended with all of the upgrades you might make for modern-car ease of use and performance, but RV8 prices are heading back down to where they were in 2017. That returns them to evergreen bargain status. Just don’t expect future price growth to cover running costs in the way that so many other affordable classics do for their owners.

What does CCM mean by its "price staircase"?
The price categories CCM uses in their assessment of the typical values are:
> Concours-perfect ones
> Mint condition
> Usable examples
> P
roject cars
Trying to search and find a detailed explanation of these condition categories on the CCM website drew a blank.

Pricewatch price guide compared with CCM Market Watch RV8 prices

Classic Car Magazine - "RV8 price
staircase"
As far as can be seen their price staircase is a broad brush indication of their view of current RV8 values. They don't seem to recognise the market value significance that the RV8 body colour (Woodcote Green and Other Colours) does have on market values.

How do the guide prices differ?

What are our condition categories used for the V8 Register's RV8 price guide?

Condition 1 - Generally excellent
No obvious areas where expenditure is required. The car is road legal, original or tastefully upgraded. As these cars are now over 45 years old most will have had some restoration to an authentic original specification or to a tastefully upgraded condition, both with documentary evidence. Service history commands higher prices. "Top-end" Condition 1 cars are generally close to "near concours" condition.

Condition 2 - Sound, but may need cosmetic attention or refurbishment
Usable, presentable and road legal car which may have had an earlier restoration. Some minor mechanical work may be needed. Any rust present should not compromise the structure (for example serious corrosion in the cills), although there may be some areas of corrosion that will require attention, possibly with replacement panels.

Condition 3 - Running but needing restoration
May or may not have a current MOT but will be in need of fairly major restoration work or a rebuild - body panels, cills, engine overhaul, interior refurbishment etc.

CCM's view of current RV8 values is around 30% lower than our Pricewatch prices
The CCM "staircase of prices" alongside looks significantly different to the V8 Register's price guide which is updated every 6 months. If you see the RV8 Condition 1 price as the marker price, and assume that our "Condition 1" is what CCM means by "Mint condition", then the variance in the two price guide figures alongside indicates CCM's view of the current RV8 Condition 1 (or Mint) value is around 30% lower than our Pricewatch RV8 price guide.

Discussing this with leading MGV8 traders close to the RV8 market, they are puzzled by the CCM RV8 values in their latest Market Watch article.
