Classic car insurance broker Footman James says in an email
to customers that with the upcoming withdrawal of the United
Kingdom from the European Union (Brexit) it is necessary to
consider how this will affect your motor insurance policy, specifically
how this will affect your ability to drive in the EU with your
motor vehicle. They add "that "unless an agreement
to the contrary is obtained, with effect from 23.00hrs on the
31st December 2020 the free circulation zone will come
to an end. That would mean every driver in the UK taking their
vehicle abroad after that date will have to carry what is termed
a Green Card a document that guarantees they have
the minimum motor insurance cover legally required for driving
in the countries they are visiting". |
Footman
James add the Green Card "will be a physical document that
will detail the driver(s) covered to drive, the vehicle(s) covered
and the countries to which your motor vehicle cover is extended
whilst within the EU. You must take this document along with
your Certificate(s) of Motor Insurance when travelling with
your vehicle(s) outside of the UK.
Please rest assured that there is no change to the level of
cover your policy affords you whilst driving in the EU. Please
view the attached
PDF for full details about why you need a Green Card and
what information you need to give us.
