RV8 at Shesley Walsh
Nic Houslip is a regular participant in track days and enjoys hillclimbs too using two MGV8s - his RV8 and a V8 Roadster. Here he has a video of one of his climbs in an RV8.

Using the video
First it may take a short period to download the video from Dropbox and then you will find Nic Houslip moves forward to begin his hillclimb at 2 min 10 secs into the video clip and reaches the top collecting area at 4 min 20 sec. There is a period until the cars come down the hill in convoy pack to the paddock. You can pull the progress of the video forward to avoid the delays.

Nic Houslip says "last week I attended the Shelsley Walsh Drivers' School and three days later the Members' Day in my RV8 ([Nightfire Red 0263, previously owned by our former Club President, Bill Wallis) which apart from the addition of 17” Rims and low profile tyres, the car is a standard RV8. It is road legal and works extremely well. Hill climbing is an extremely exciting sport, although there is a lot of waiting around for a rather short track time - just under 50 secs. A short video of one of my runs is available to watch following the link below. Link

As you watch the video there is a waiting period as the cars line up for their run up the hill. There are usually 20 or 30 cars there gathered before the start line ready to make their run. The marking on the road SPIN is where you are permitted to spin the drive wheels to warm the tyres. The video shows the climb live. After the runs we are collected at Top Paddock until the last car has gone up, then we come down in convoy and await the call for the next run.

When you load the video from Dropbox you can fast forward to 3 min 10 sec and see the start of my climb as the green light changes. It's hard acceleration in first gear off the line, shifting to 2nd as we pass the commentary box, slightly ease off as we approach Kennel (with Blue safety cells on the barrier) then back on the gas and shift into 3rd as we go through Kink. From then it’s a long hard climb on wide open throttle (WOT) in 3rd through Crossing to the Bottom S, a tight left hander, approached with a late turn in at the end of the wooden sleepers on the right and then keeping close to but avoiding the rumble strip on the left (or your false teeth may fall out) then staying close into the left bank prior to a late turn in to Top S and then progressively hard acceleration away up the finish straight to the line.

From satnav data the speed across the line is about 65 mph. Although Member’s Day and School Days are not timed, from the camera data it looks like I’m getting through in under 50 secs. The record is held by a single seater car at 22.58 secs but with weight of probably a third of my RV8 and with probably at least twice the horsepower".

Shelsley Walsh
The Shelsley Walsh Speed Hill Climb is a hillclimb in Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire and is organised by the Midland Automobile Club (MAC). It is one of the oldest motorsport events in the World, and is in fact the oldest to have been staged continuously (wartime excepted) on its original course, first having been run in 1905. On that first occasion, the course was 992 yards (907 m) in length, but in 1907 it was standardised at 1,000 yards (914 m), the length it remains today. Shelsley Walsh is a notably steep course by the standards of today's hillclimbs. It rises 328 feet (100 m) during its length, for an average gradient of 1 in 9.14 (10.9%), with the steepest section being as much as 1 in 6.24 (16%). This makes Shelsley a hill on which power is important, and on which the gap in times between the most powerful cars and the rest is greater than at many other venues. It is also narrow, being no more than 12 feet (3.66 m) wide at some points.
