An email related a sad story which is an example of how clever the scammers have become - it said "I was the victim last week of what the police and my bank describe as a quite brilliant scam. I lost a lot of money to people purporting to be from Talk Talk, my media provider. They were able to create a facsimile of my bank statement and then refunded me money. I saw it on my account, albeit it was a false one, but I was not to know. They gave me too much and then asked for the difference back. By the time I had done that they had taken the original amounts they had refunded and left me hugely out of pocket. The bank say they have had a lot of Talk Talk scams and also from some with Microsoft. The police had records of the phone numbers the scammers used and of similar complaints, why they didnt arrest them I dont know. The number was a Lockerbie number."

The email adds "the police have said never take a call, even if they know a lot about you . . . . always ask to call back, immediately, after you have checked the number with the firm they say they are from." However I have heard that you should call them from another phone in case the scammers are still monitoring the phone they had called you on. The email went on to say "also tell them it may be a while before you call back as you are a policeman/woman and have had a call on your police line. Funnily enough the next day I got a call from someone wanting to help sort out my accident claim . . . . . I havent had one . . . . so I said I was a policeman and the phone went dead. It works!!"
