Look out for chalk markings of burglars and car thieves

In a recent Neighbourhood Watch circular there was an item on the chalk markings that have been found outside properties that have been linked to burglaries. The Neighbourhood Watch officer says "if you find one of these markings please call 101 to report it". Some examples of these chalk markings are alongside and you can see the full set of examples in a linked PDF document. More

The circular goes on to report there has also been a rise in the theft of high value motor vehicles and thieves are targeting mainly BMWs, Land Rovers and Range Rovers and are using a device to prevent the locking of the vehicle, after which they access the onboard computer and use another device to re-program a key. This process takes a matter of minutes and they are then able to drive your vehicle away without causing any damage. The Neighbourhood Watch officer's advice is "please ensure that vehicles are kept secured and check that your security is up to date with immobilisers and trackers fitted and functioning. We also advise the use of steering locks. Use a garage or bollard on your driveway if you have them or park in a well lit area".
Fortunately reports of the theft of classic MGs like the MGBGTV8 and RV8 models are relatively rare but as values increase it's inevitable these cars will increasingly become the target of car thieves. Most classic car insurance policies require the car to be garaged overnight and it is prudent to take very great care when parking in a public place or even on a driveway. The techniques determined car thieves use include equipment to physically lift cars and transport them away not only during the hours of drakness but often boldly during the day. Lifting a car overcomes any issues with breaking and entering the car and jumping the ignition system to be able to drive the car away.
