The press coverage of the announcements by the UK Government earlier this week focussed on centre lane hogging and tailgating but there was more beneath the headlines. The press statement on the GOV.UK website went on to say that
existing fixed penalty levels for most motoring offences - including using a mobile phone at the wheel and not wearing a seatbelt - will rise to £100” but there was no mention of the offence for which more fixed penalties are issued than any other – speeding! Can it be that focussing on the “pet hates” of drivers was thought likely to be more popular than the offence drivers are more likely to commit? Perish the thought!

New measures announced on 5th June 2013 by Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond included on-the-spot penalties for careless drivers who put other road users at risk.

As with other existing fixed penalty notice offences, such as speeding, police forces will also be able to offer careless drivers the option of remedial training.
How common is centre lane hogging?
Well the V8 Webmaster popped out along the M3 yesterday evening and in less than 5 miles on a relatively quiet motoway he encountered three blatant cases. See his illustrated report
